Our Short History Georgikon, the first regular agricultural higher education institution on the Continent of Europe, was founded by Count György Festetics of Tolna in 1797, and soon became the promoter of the capitalization process of the feudal estate system and the supporter of scientific progress during the period of the Enlightenment and Reform Age in Hungary. After the Hungarian war of independence in 1848 the education started again in 1865, under the name of National Husbandry and Forestry High College. In 1869 the name of the institution was changed to national Husbandry School, and again in 1869 another name change took place leaving the organizational structure untouched, naming the institution Royal Hungarian High College of Agriculture. Due to political reasons from 1949 the education was interrupted again in Keszthely for period of 5 years, and it was restarted only in 1954, at the Agricultural Academy of Keszthely. In 1962 the institution was reorganized as the College of Agriculture, and in 1970 as the University of Agriculture, with two faculties, at Keszthely and at Mosonmagyaróvár, respectively. Since 1989 the 200 year old institution, as the Georgikon Faculty of Agriculture of the Pannon University of Agricultural Sciences, has been dealing with education, research, extension and other scientific activities. |
